Teaching Life Skills Trough Climbing
-
Climbing is the ultimate full body workout that improves coordination, flexibility and builds strength. Climbing can be used as a great form of cross training to improve overall fitness for other sports.
-
Every boulder provides a unique set of challenges that is as much of a mental workout as it is physical. There are many ways to complete a climb and through the process of trial and error, all climbers must think of new ways to try things and evaluate their success.
-
Completing a challenging problem is the most concrete example of a confidence booster that serves as the ultimate reward for putting in the necessary time and effort. Climbers will “fail” many times in the process of succeeding. Every “failure” provides a learning opportunity that can be used to reach a goal.
-
In many ways bouldering is an individual sport, but it also provides an opportunity to watch, listen and learn from other climbers. Climbers learn to ask for help when necessary, share tips with others and encourage each other.
-
Measurable success is crucial to track progress. Topping boulders and progressing through the range of grades provides instant feedback and concrete measures of success.
-
Climbing is a non-traditional sport that provides an opportunity for everybody to be successful. Many kids that struggle with traditional team sports thrive in climbing, especially those on the autism spectrum.
